The Role Of A Soldier In The Defence Of India Essay

Every Indian contributes something as far as the defence of India is concerned. But the role which a soldier plays in defending and protecting the borders of India, is unparalleled. A soldier is the most disciplined person of the nation. Upon him depends, to a great extent, the security and stability of the nation.

A soldier’s life, no doubt, is very difficult. It is he who obeys the orders of his commanders and does what is ordered by them. A soldier keeps night-long vigils on the borders even in the face of great and grave dangers. He stands heroically before his enemies. For a soldier, in the words of Long fellow:

“Their’s not to make reply,
Their’s not to reason why,
Their’s but to do and die.”

A soldier faces death bravely. He fights up to the last moment of his life in order to protect his motherland. He sacrifices everything for the sake of the nation. It is he who goes into the jaws of death while defending his country.

His life is not a bed of roses; rather, it is a bed of thorns. With his limited income, he feeds himself and his family. The life of a soldier is really very uncertain but he is not scared of it. For him, defence of the country is his foremost duty and responsibility.

During the war, he fights bravely but at the same time, he helps the civilian population as well, like during the times of natural calamities or any other big mishappening like accidents, fire break-outs, etc. The role which Indian soldiers played during Indo-Pak wars is exemplary. Our soldiers helped and assisted the civilian population of Pakistan. They carried food and clothing to the remotest areas and acted in accordance with the most noble military traditions.

Every soldier is ready to face death. He never shirks from responsibility. He fights in the most difficult terrains on the hills and mountains, plains and forests. The defence of the country is the only mission of his life.

A writer, a politician, a statesman, a businessman and a teacher play their own roles through their actions, abilities and aptitudes. But the role which a soldier plays while safeguarding the frontiers of the motherland, is paramount and unique. He lives for the nation and dies for its dignity. He makes history and history immortalises him.

India – A Land Of Diversity Essay

India is a kaleidoscope of cultures that includes umpteen variations in food, clothing, language, music and religious beliefs. This colourful spread has been shaped by the long history and unique geography of this land. Though cut off from the world by three oceans and the highest chain of mountains, this penissula has been invaded time and again through the almost inaccessible mountain passes. Besides, more than four hundred main languages, there are thousands of others including dialects that are distinctly different to each other.

The diversity of India’s languages can be understood by the fact that the Indian currency has 15 languages, besides Hindi and English, printed on it, and most sign boards are written in English, Hindi and the state language.

India is one of the most religiously diverse nations of the world with each individual free to follow his own rites and beliefs.. Home to four of the world’s major religions, minor religions too play an important role in the lives of the people.

Clothes have always been fashioned by necessity. While loose, light clothes are worn in the hot and humid southern India, the cold northern regions like Kashmir, has its inhabitants wearing woollen clothes almost round the year. The desert areas of Rajasthan and Gujarat have the people dorring colourful clothes. In contrast, people of the lush green eastern regions are known for their preference of lighter colours.

Besides a host of stitched clothing India is perhaps the only country where unstitched clothes like the sari, lungi, dhoti and turban remain popular items.

The landscape which includes dry deserts, snowy mountains, fertile plains and evergreen forests hosts a unique ecosystem which is rich in great variety of flora and fauna. The lofty Himalayas are an imposing contrast to the low, flat plains spread at its feet. And the rugged Deccan area is a far cry from the hot marshy areas of the Sunderban delta.

Indian cuisine is so very diverse that it is practically impossible to know and taste all the dishes prepared in the country. If the northern people are predominantly wheat eaters, the rest of India are avid rice eaters. Whilst fish is an essential part of the coastal meal, there are numerous people who do not eat anything but vegetables and fruits. The meals cooked, depend upon the available raw materials, cooking traditions and local spices.

Not for nothing was India known for spices by the earliest of traders. The variety of spices available in the different regions of India are so great that there is no alternate name for them in the English language. Each spice is also known for its curative property. Sweet dishes prepared from milk, sugar, juggery and coconut are commonly found in all regions, in their local variations. If Maharashtra is known for its Shrikhand, Punjab is famous for its Halwa. Bengal of course is world famous for its variety of milk-based sweets.

Years of foreign rule has not been able to wipe out the festivals that are a prominent part of our culture. Major festivals are celebrated all over the country with equal fervour, but there are thousands of other festivals that are locally celebrated with great enthusiasm.

If the cities of India portray the modern India with technological hubs in Bangalore and Mumbai, the remote areas still preserve a rich and varied tribal population.

In short, the variations of India’s cultural diversity are strung together with a colourful string of peace and harmony. But this great diversity of India never mars its unity. India, is indeed, an embodiment of ‘unity in diversity’.

Respect For Elders Essay

It is truly said that ‘a disrespectful person never earns respect for himself. Respect for elders is one of the most important characteristic of any culture. This can be seen in all its glory amongst the Japanese, considered to be one of the richest and most developed nation, respect for elders is one of the strongest pillars that have built up this tiny island nation. They have taken the best of the West and blended it smoothly with the best of the East. While adopting the latest technology from the West, they did not in any way give up their own traditions.

India too has an ancient culture in which respect for elders holds prime position. Even now, there are numerous joint families that are headed by an elder who may be in his nineties. Though long retired from actively holding the reins of the family, every child and grandchild is well aware of his position at the helm. A father who has taught his son to respect his grandfather can be sure that he will earn the respect of his grandchildren in future.

On a larger scale, respect is not to be restricted only within the house. Be it the school, college or public place, the elders deserve respect.

Nowadays, there are many teeangers who think being rude is fashionable. They think rude and aggressive behaviour is considered smart. They talk back when corrected, push past elders walking slowly and never even consider lending a helping hand to elderly person.

No society consider all this as good or polite behaviour, but we also do not believe in regimentation. Just as the new generation should respect the elders, so also the elders should conduct themselves with dignity. They should set up a positive example. After all respect cannot be demanded, it can only be commanded.

Reading Habbit Essay

Knowledge knows no bounds. Even after gaining great knowledge, we are not satiated as there is much more than we can absorb. Reading books contributes towards the enrichment of our knowledge in terms of human experiences and information.

Unfortunately, we in India do not have the reading habit. That is why, in India, 70 percent of the total number of books published are the text books whereas in the Western countries, this percentage is not more than 30 percent.

Once, the famous Indian writer, Mulk Raj Anand was asked about reasons for low reading habit in India. His reply was that India had a tradition of verbal communication of knowledge from one generation to another.

Even today, the formal teaching method of imparting knowledge to students is based on ‘rote memory,’ lectures and reproduction. It hardly expects the students to delve into the vast mass of knowledge. This method touches students superficially and in effect, it has failed to arouse an inner urge among them for self-study.

The inculcation of the habit of reading depends upon three factors – pedagogical, bibliographical and bibliothecal. The first one is related to teaching and can play an important role. But the teaching profession unfortunately, lays more emphasis on achieving short term objectives rather than on the ultimate goal.

In order to prepare for examinations, students prefer to consult more diluted and cheap text books rather than the standard texts. Teaching should lay stress on self improvement and self development of the students to prepare them for their lives. For self improvement, love for books and reading are the essential prerequisites.

This should be supplemented with the right type of reading material and that is the bibliographical factor. Unfortunately, we have very little reading material for children and adults. Language is another barrier. We are also divorced from the mainstream of literature because there is hardly any translation facility available in the country. So, we do not know anything about what has been written in the different parts of the country in various languages.

The third factor is the bibliothecal factor. It under¬lines the role of the library as an institution to coordinate the activities of two factors described, earlier. There should be libraries that must be rich in terms of collections. The books should be easily available.

Books are man’s best friend and treasure of knowledge. Habit of reading makes a man perfect and gives a key of the vast treasure of knowledge.

It is extremely wrong to try and force someone else into your way of thinking. I like eating potatoes, I should also respect the person who does not. If someone likes chocolate flavoured ice cream, he should not criticise me for liking the pineapple flavour. In short, as long as you are not harming anyone or causing a hinderance to society, each person should be allowed to choose his way of life.

Terrorism, which started in small pockets, has taken a global proportion. It has spread like wild fire, mainly in underdeveloped areas that are low in literacy and culture. Politicians looking for a quick path to power, instigate and inspire innocent youth with fiery speeches. Most often they use religion as an excuse – any person who does not agree with their beliefs, is a non-believer and should therefore be destroyed. I wonder which religious text or spiritual leader advocates the killing of another human!

All the major religions of the world strongly profess the path of peace and tolerance, and condemn any form of violence and hatred. If we look back in history, we see that of all the great civilisations that flourished, only those that practised tolerance and a peaceful coexistence, have survived upto the present day. All the others were destroyed.

Terrorism cannot and should not continue. The only thing it does is spread hate and bloodshed, it has destroyed countries and cultures; families have been wiped out and towns and villages have been razed to the ground. But finally hate destroys the hater.
