Math Labs with Activity – Verify that the Sum of any Two Sides of a Triangle

OBJECTIVE

To verify that the sum of any two sides of a triangle is always greater than the third side and also that the difference of any two sides of a triangle is always less than the third side

Material Required

  1. A sheet of white paper
  2. A ruler
  3. A few broomsticks
  4. A cutter

Procedure
Step 1: Cut the broomsticks according to the following measurements. Form different sets by selecting these in triplets. Now try to make triangles out of these triplets.
Step 2:
Set 1 – (See Figure 13.1(a)-13.1(c))
(a) 2 cm, 3 cm, 6 cm
(b) 3 cm, 4 cm, 8 cm
(c) 5 cm, 5 cm, 11 cm

Set 2 – (See Figure 13.2(a)-13.2(c))
(a) 4 cm, 4 cm, 8 cm
(b) 5 cm, 4 cm, 9 cm
(c) 3 cm, 2 cm, 5 cm

Set 3 – (See Figure 13.3(a)-13.3(c))
(a) 5 cm, 4 cm, 8 cm
(b) 5 cm, 6 cm, 10 cm
(c) 4 cm, 4 cm, 7 cm

Step 3: Record the lengths of the sticks in the observation table and-also the possibility of triangle formation.

Observations
Math Labs with Activity - Verify that the Sum of any Two Sides of a Triangle 6

Result
We observe that the triangle formation is possible only if the sum of any two sides of the triangle is larger than the third side and consequently if the difference of any two sides of the triangle is less than the third side.
