Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Distance Education: The Government of Tamil Nadu established Manonmaniam Sundaranar University on 7th September 1990 as a teaching-cum-affiliating University. It is named after the famous verse drama Manonmaniam, written by the renowned Tamil Poet scholar, Professor P. Sundaram Pillai (1855-1897).

The motto of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University is “Reaching the Unreached.” There are 7 affiliated Colleges, 6 University Colleges, and 4 Constituent Colleges, of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University amongst which three colleges are over 100 years old – M.D.T. Hindu College, Sarah Tucker College, and St. John’s College. The oldest women’s college in the state is Sarah Tucker College, which has contributed decisively to the cause of higher education in this region.
