Long Essay on An Hour At The Railway Platform 500 Words for Kids and Students in English

A railway platform is a world in itself. The rich and the poor, educated and illiterate as well as young and old have one aim – waiting for the train. Some talk of business, others of household affairs, still others of courts and colleges but the departure or arrival of their trains haunts the minds of all. The only subject that is of some interest to everyone is the time of arrival or departure of the train.

Life at the railway platform seems to move at a very quick pace. People rush around, some check up time of arrival or of departure of the trains, while others go to buy tickets or eatables. Some others move around the railway station and try to locate their kith and kin. Coolies (porters) and TTEs move at a slower pace; it is a matter of routine for them.

A variety of goods lie scattered all over the platform. There are shining bags, dirty trunks, huge bundles, new toys and what not? It seems as if some helicopters had dropped these goods.

Children are patted, kissed, beaten or snubbed. A child crying for a shining toy, is put off with an excuse. Another becoming a nuisance is beaten up and still others are hugged affectionately. Dressed neatly, many of them seem to be uncomfortable in their new shoes or new dresses. From some places, one can hear cries of the children.

To make this confusion more confounding, there are quarrels as well. Passengers are found quarrelling with the porters over charges. They quarrel among themselves over petty matters. But these quarrels do not assume serious dimensions.

In contrast to this, there is the sound of loud laughter too. Young people are seen cracking jokes. Subordinates who have come to see their boss off, try to please him in every possible way.

Hawkers do not attract many customers. They hawk their goods, shouting loudly as if by force of habit. These hawkers do not indulge in much of salesmanship.

As the train steams in, everyone moves briskly. Hawkers shout louder. People see their friends and relatives off with folded hands and heavy hearts. They garland the persons as if they were going to the battlefield.

Equally emotional is the meeting of those who come to receive their near and dear ones. The announcements from the loudspeakers divert the attention but for a short period of time. What a great stage of life is the railway platform!
