Three food myths prevalent in the society are:

  1. Drinking water while eating meals is bad – It is certainly a myth passed from generation to generation. Water intake certainly doesn’t damage your digestive process.
  2. Don’t drink milk immediately after eating fish – There is no scientific reason why a person cannot have milk and fish together.
  3. Eggs are bad for heart – Eggs contain cholesterol in their yolks. However they are not bad at all for health if people eat one egg a day

Parvatasana is in form of a mountain pose.
Procedure:

  • Sit down on yoga mat in a cross legged position.
  • Bring hands in front so that palms face towards the performer.
  • Exhale and move hands over head keeping the fingers interlocked and hands stretched upwards. Pull torso in upward direction high as one can.
  • Come down to the original position . Repeat the asana for 8-10 times.

Benefits:

  • Improves health of internal organs.
  • Helps in losing body weight.

Contraindications:

  • Do not strain the nerves.
  • Avoid hunching back during sitting position

Yoga helps in curing back – pain by performing various asanas:

  • Tadasana – Tada means palm. Tadasana is the beginning and ending asana of Surya Namaskar. It improves strength of vertebral column and activates the nerves of the entire body thus relieving from back pain.
  • Vakrasana – Vakra means twisting. It is a simplified form of Ardhamatsyendrasana. It increases elasticity of spine and tones spinal nerves. It also relieves from stiffness of vertebrate thereby relieving from back pain.
  • Bhujangasana – It is similar to the position of cobra when it is about to attack its prey by raising its hood. It develops flexibility of spine and cures backache.

Answer 19.
ASD is the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Its causes are:

  • Genetic – Certain genes that a child inherits from his parents could make the child vulnerable to ASD. Example younger siblings of children with ASD can also develop into the same condition, and it’s common for identical twins.
  • Environmental triggers – Premature births can also be a cause of ASD. Alcohol or certain medication (like sodium valproate) taken by the mother while the child is in the womb may also develop ASD.

Answer 20.
The topic of women participation in the Olympics can explain the development of women participation in the sports. In 1900 Paris Olympic Games just 22 women athletes out of 997 athletes participated. Women participation has increased from 2.2% to 44.2% from 1900 to 2012. But the women participation varies from country to country. With regard to India the figures are not as at the world level. Women should be encouraged in order to increase their participation in sports –

  • There should be more appreciation and support from the audiences or spectators so that their positive behavior shall encourage the players for the better performance.
  • Transportation issues should be kept in mind when it comes to the female players. The organization committee should make appropriate arrangement regarding pick up and drop facilities of the players. As a result even the family members will be satisfied and tension
    free.
  • Number of women coaches should also be increased in order to coach the women players regarding their game as people feel more comfortable with the person of the same sex.
  • Media plays a great role in communicating or publicizing about the victory and loses of the competitors of various games. Media should also cover the sports involving women so that the others of their lot feel proud and come up for participation in sports too.
  • Appropriate facilities in terms of gears, equipments and medical help should be the priority of the organizing committee and made available to the woman players so that they don’t hesitate in taking part in various sports.

Answer 21.
Rikli and Jones senior citizens fitness test was developed by Dr. Roberta and Dr. Jessie Jones of Fullerton University. It includes:

  1. Chair Stand Test – To measure leg strength and endurancer.
    Procedure – Subject is advised to sit on the chair with arms crossed around the wrists and hands are kept close to the chest. After this the subject stands completely and then reaches again the same sitting position. This activity is repeated for 30 seconds.
  2.  Arm Curl Test – To measure upper body strength.
    Procedure – The subject sits on the chair keeping the back straight and holds weight in strong hand. The subject performs arm curls in 30 seconds.
  3. Back Scratch Test – To measure range of motion of shoulder.
    Procedure – The subject is advised to stand initially. After this one hand is placed behind the head and other arm is bent behind the back. Test administrator helps in guiding the subject about the alignment of the fingertips. If the tip of both index finger touches, then the score is awarded zero. In case it is not touching the gap is measured and this is awarded as negative score. While overlapping distance is given as positive score. Reading is taken twice and the best score is awarded.
  4. Eight Foot Up and Go Test – To measure speed, agility and balance while moving.
    Procedure – A cone is placed 8 feet away from the chair which is placed away from wall. On the command “go” the subject starts before sitting on chair. The subject is advised to walk briskly and turn around the cone and again sits on the chair. The time is measured for this whole activity. The two trials are conducted. The best trial is counted for scoring.
  5. Six Minute Walk Test – To measure aerobic fitness.
    Procedure – the walking course is marked in a 50 yard (45.72 meters) rectangular area dimensions 45><5 yards.

Answer 22.
Regular exercise slows down the process of ageing as-

  • Helps in maintaining bone density – regular exercise reduces the risk of loss of bone density and osteoporosis which usually begins after 40 years of age. The person also becomes prone to more fractures.
  • slows down brain functions – regular exercise maintains balanced blood flow to the brain and prevents many diseases like Alzheimer.
  • improves muscular strength – the strength of muscle and muscle mass persists for longer
    time in the people who do regular exercise.
  • cardio respiratory fitness – inspite of the old age, people are able to improve their Cardio respiratory fitness (which decreases with time) through regular exercise.
  • prevents or delays diseases – regular exercise can prevent from diseases and disabilities like arthritis, heart disease, diabetes , high blood pressure, etc.

Answer 23.
Sports injuries are very common in this competitive world. They can be caused due to improper i warming up, overuse of muscles, improper sports equipments or even due to the poor training.
They can be prevented by doing a proper warm up before playing the game, keeping in mind the rules and regulations, using protective sports gear, wearing proper footwear, taking adequate rest and also by taking appropriate nutrition before the match.
Management of sports injuries-

  1. First aid for closed fracture – The injured part can be immobilized with the help of splint or sling as per the site.
  2. First aid for open fracture – In open fracture the open wound must be covered by sterile
    gauze or dressing. The compression and elevation is given to control the bleeding. The splint is given to immobilize the injured part.
  3. Management of Abraision, Contusion and Laceration/Incision – These injuries can be prevented by using protective equipment. The treatment should
    begin with washing the wound immediately with soap and water. A cotton gauze rinsed with antiseptic lotion can be used to remove any piece of loose debris from the wound. After drying it apply antibiotic ointment. Bandage the area if the wound is still bleeding.
  4. Management of Strain and Sprain – It can be prevented by warming up and conditioning. Taping, knee caps, crape bandage : can be helpful in preventing strain and sprain. The injured part should be elevated in the most comfortable position. The affected part should not be disturbed. An ice pack should be applied to affect joint or muscle to minimize the swelling. The ice must be applied for 20 minutes 6-10 times in first 24 hours. Next day heat and massage is given to absorb the clot.
  5. Management of Dislocation
    • Reduction – Ihiring this process, the doctor may try some gentle movements around
      the affected joint to help the bones back into position. In case of severe pain local anesthetic procedures are adopted.
    • Immobilization – After getting the bones at normal position the bones should be ; immobilized with a splint or sling for several weeks. The time for which splint or sling is to be used depends upon extent of damage to nerves, blood vessels and supporting tissues.

Answer 24.

  1. Newton’s First Law of Motion
    Law of inertia – This law states that a body at rest will remain at rest and a body in motion will remain in motion at the same speed and in the same direction till any external force is . applied on it to change that state.
    Application in sports
    Example: In basketball, players on the court must keep in mind about dribbling because the ball will continue to bounce for some time if they lose control. If the ball bounces too far away from the player, his or her team can lose possession.
  2. Newton’s Second Law of Motion
    This law states that the acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force producing it and inversely proportional to its mass.
    Application in sports

    • Runners struggle while stopping at the finish line because it requires a very sudden change in motion.
    • Shot-put throw.
  3. Newton’s Third Law of Motion
    This law states that to every action, there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
    Application in sports
    While swimming, the swimmer pushes the water backwards using his hands and thus attains a forward push due to an equal and opposite reaction from the water.

Answer 25.
Role of sports in the overall personality development is

  1. Physical development – Games lead to proficiency in the neuro-muscular coordination, well organized games are stimulant to physical growth. They shape the body and maintain the optimum health from childhood to adulthood and gain speed, strength, flexibility etc.
  2. Mental Development – Individuals learn to make judgments, utilize reflective and creative thinking to obtain knowledge about rules and regulations through sports and it also sharpens an individual’s mind.
  3. Social Development – Players belonging to different places come closer to one another, human relations are developed, social qualities like fair play sportsmanship, courtesy are developed, games are just like fields where seeds of high character are sown and a harvest of better man is reaped.
  4. Emotional Development – Games develop emotions like hope, jealousy, distress, anger etc. and enable the individual to have proper control over these emotions.
  5. It also helps in building confidence and higher self – Esteem.
  6. Playing any kind of sport develops leadership qualities in an individual.

Answer 26.
Interval training method was introduced by Woldemar and Greshler in 1939. It is a training that contains fast and slow periods of exercise. The short periods of load are followed by the short periods of rest; an athlete can perform greatest volume of work by breaking the total work into small periods. Fox and Mathews explained the following variables of interval training in 1974:

  • Rate and distance of work
  • No. of repetitions
  • Duration of rest
  • Type of activity during the rest intervals
  • Frequency of training per week

Guiding principle of interval training
An athlete is directed to cover a specific distance within definite time period so that he achieves the maximal heart rate, i.e. approx 180-200 beats per minute. After this, a pause is given which is insufficient for complete recovery. When the heart rate of the athlete comes down to 120¬130 beats per minute, the next repetition is started at once. Like this, load is repeated many , times.
Checking the heart rate
It should be recorded for 15 seconds and then it is multiplied by four for an accurate pulse j rate in beats per minute. The pulse may be taken by placing the hand directly over the artery in the neck.
Fartlek Training
Advantages – It is flexible in nature. Due to sprinting intervals, it makes the body versatile.
Disadvantages – It causes accidents as it is not pre-planned and in this a check on trainees cannot be maintained.
