SECTION-A
Reading — 20 Marks

Question 1.
Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow
1. One of the most frequently asked question by patients is, “What am I allergic to?” Well everything under the sun, as even the sun can cause allergy. Allergy is the hyper-active response of our immune system to substances which are ordinarily harmless. Such environmental substances are known as allergens.

2. According to Dr. SPS Bakshi, CMD, Bakson Group, “The main symptom of allergy is inflammation, which occurs as a result of excessive activation of mast cells and basophils by a type of antibody known as IgE.” He also says that whenever our body is exposed to an allergen, the immune system exhibits this inflammatory process (pain, redness, heat and swelling), reflects itself on skin as dandruff, rashes (dermatitis/psoriasis/eczema), alopecia, acne and lichen planus and in musculoskeletal system as joint pain, cervical or lumbar spondylosis, headache, backache and sciatica. It is reflected in the respiratory system as tonsillitis, adenoiditis, sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis and even asthma. Similar reactions occur in the case of food allergies where inflammation occurs in the digestive tract. This may be in the form of mouth ulcers, flatulence (gas), hyperacidity, colitis and irregular bowel habits.

3. Avoidance of allergens is not practical or possible. Dr Bakshi says that the solution is a stronger immune system which is possible with homeopathy. Some of the commonly used homeopathic medicines for various allergies are:
Bakson’s Aller Adi
Tablets: This is for running nose, fever, sneezing and sinus congestion. Take one tablet thrice daily.
Dr. Bakshi’s Homeopathic Formula D Tablets: For skin ailments characterised by redness, intense itching, scaling and oozing eruptions. Take one tablet twice daily.
Bakson’s Rheum Aid
Tablets and Syrup: Relieves pain, stiffness and impaired functioning of the affected parts. Take one tablet or one tablespoon of syrup thrice a day. It is also available in gel form as an external application for muscular pains.
Bakson’s Gastro Aid
Tablets and Syrup: Provides relief from indigestion, hyperacidity, abdominal cramps and constipation. Take one tablet thrice a day or 1-2 teaspoon of syrup with some lukewarm water, thrice daily after meals. All the medicines are to be taken under the supervision of a registered homeopathic medical practitioner only.

Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow
1. Robots are already being used in areas where replacing humans sounded like plot of a fantasy novel. One such area is education. Today robots are increasingly being used as teaching assistants to help out in the classroom. In South Korea, a telepresence-focused robot, Robosem, is already teaching English in a country where certified English teachers are rare.

2. Because of its interactivity, a robot is a big asset in imparting lessons to students, especially the young ones. In the future, robots may take up much more important roles in the classroom. That day no longer seems to be a dream when students will walk into classes and find robots waiting to check on their homework.

3. The future will mostly be about people using robots to accomplish work that is more interesting and fulfilling. Advances in the development of robots mean they will be able to perform multiple tasks more quickly, safely and efficiently than humans. With robots taking over most of the boring jobs, humans can concentrate more on meaningful work, such as research and development for making life better for everyone.

4. Amajor problem that the world faces today is the scarcity of land and lack of living spaces in urban areas. In the future, technology might just solve this problem. Scientists have already predicted that oceans might be the next place where humans will build their homes and living spaces.

5. While technology limits us from doing that today, in the future entire cities could be suspended under the sea. Inside enormous livable babbles, homes, schools, offices and even parks could be built using the water itself to make oxygen and generating hydrogen fuel in the process.

King Vikram was very intelligent. He was known as the King of wisdom. His popularity spread out far and wide. His people were also very pleased at his justice because he satisfied all the people by his justice. He was so intelligent that nobody could challenge him for his wisdom. Many queens and other persons tried to test him but all failed. Once the Queen, Mitali heard about Vikram’s wisdom and his fame. She was eager to meet him and wanted to test his wisdom. So one day she asked her maid servants to bring two garlands one natural and one artificial. Her maid servants brought both types of garlands and gave them to the Queen. Now she went to the King’s palace.

The courtroom was filled with people to examine his wisdom. She asked the king to identify the artificial and the natural garland, if he did not mind. This question was not difficult for him. The King Vikram ordered his servants to go and open all the windows of the courtroom. All were surprised to hear it. They were thinking why the King had ordered this. But when the windows were opened, a large number of bees swarmed around the real garland and smelling its fragrance. Thus the King found out which was natural and which was artificial. All were very surprised to see it. The queen was also much impressed by seeing his sharp brain.

OR

A little boy and his mother were walking in the park. It was a Sunday evening and the park was crowded with lots of families enjoying the cool weather. Everywhere they looked they saw children eating delicious ice-creams. The little boy begged his mother for an ice cream, but though they walked for a long time they could not seem to find an ice cream vendor. The boy began to get tired but still he insisted he wanted an ice-cream before they went home. At least after circling almost the entire park they found an ice-cream vendor. The man told then that he had almost sold out all his stock but one last cone was there. The boy was thrilled. But just as he took the cone it slipped from his hand and dropped onto the dusty path.

The disappointed child burst out in tears. His mother embraced him and tried to soothe him with his loving words. She carried him home, still sobbing. At last after a hot bath and denner when she had, she tucked him into his cosy bed with a kiss and a promise that the next day, they would go back to the park for another ice cream he was finally happy again and slept peacefully.

1. Valli’s sole purpose was to enjoy the bus-ride. She neither had the money to buy anything
from the shops at the town nor the courage to get down at a strange place among strangers. That is why she did not get down the bus.

2. When the pilot of Dakota Plane asked the woman in the control centre about the black aeroplane and its pilot, she could not help him because she had seen no other plane flying that night on the radar.

3. When Tricki was being turn away to the surgery for treatment Mrs. Pumphery started weeping. The whole staff was told to keep Tricki’s accessories in the car. The maids rushed in and out bringing his day bed, lunch and supper bowls when Tricki left everyone there in tears.

4. Max’s face turned black with anger. There was frequent knocking on the unlocked door. Ausable said that the police was there and they would shoot Max on sight. Max had not expected such a sudden turn of events. He was terribly angry with Ausable.

5. Chubukov claims that the Meadows are theirs. Lomov cannot prove anything by crying. He tells Lomov that he doesn’t want anything of his. But he doesn’t want to give up what is his. If Lomov keeps on arguing he will give the Meadows to the peasants than to Lomov.

Answer 10.
In his endeavour to get freedom for his countrymen from the policy of racial segregation, Nelson Mandela had to undergo many hardships and suffered a lot. This great patriot had to sacrifice the comfort of his home and loving family. He was declared an outlaw for demanding equality for all his fellow black Africans. He was punished, isolated and put into jail. He and his comrades were oppressed and tortured beyond tolerance. He suffered hunger, oppression and injustice but kept the flame of independence burning in his heart. His undaunted courage, persistent struggle and unparallel sacrifice bore fruit and South Africa got freedom from the policy of Apartheid.

Oliver Lutkins lived in New Mullion, a town some 40 miles out of the city. His presence was needed as a witness in some case. Letters were sent to him by the law firm but he did not respond. So the firm sent a fresh law graduate to locate Lutkins and serve summons to him. Since he did not recognise Lutkins, he was easily tricked by the man. Lutkins plays the key role in the story. His jovial nature, lively description of people and harmless joke played on the lawyer make the story very much interesting, engrossing and enjoyable.

When Anne remarks that paper is more patient than people, she wants to convey the difficulty she has in expressing herself openly in front of others. She is afraid to confide in people, even in her own elder sister, Margot, because she is scared that she might hurt her family and friends. Anne repeatedly claims that there are two distinct sides of her – one who is happy, exuberant, frivolous while the other one is serious, sensitive and pure. She is afraid that if people see her other side of personality which is pure and genuine, they will make fun of her and consider her ridiculous and sentimental. That is why she never shows her inner-self. She adds that what she says is not what she feels. People in the Annexe think that she is a flirt, boy crazy and talkative. Even if it hurts her, she pretends that it does not bother her.

She tends to be the happy-go-lucky Anne in public, but we the readers get a direct view of her serious, sensitive and warm personality. She wears a mask of a frivolous, carefree teenager but when we go through her thoughts and feelings towards others, we find a different Anne, a very matured and serious girl. She herself admits that she is always being taken as a “lighthearted” Anne that she is used to put up with. The nice Anne never comes up on stage in public; she comes up when she is alone. She sometimes feel sad and hurt as she is not able to bring out her original self, because she is surrounded by negative opinions, dismayed looks and mocking faces that do not allow her to show her inner-self. It is a double-personality syndrome that nearly all people have but Anne’s two personalities peep out of her diary and everyone can read and notice them.

Once Peter was dragging the sack of beans to the attic upstairs. He was busy in pulling up the sixth sack when the bottom seam of the sack split. A positive hailstorm of brown beans came pouring down and rattled down the stairs. Anne was standing at the bottom of the stairs. There was a great noise when the beans came tumbling down. The noise made Peter frightened. Moreover, the noise could have attracted the attention of anybody and they could have created unnecessary problems for the inmates of the hiding place. But soon Peter was roaring with laughter. He saw Anne surrounded by the brown beans and she was standing still in the middle. She was surrounded up to her knees in beans.

Anne was like a little island in the middle of the sea of beans. This incident provided some moments of laughter. Peter went upto the loft to fetch some old newspapers. The light was dim. He had to hold the trapdoor firmly to get down the steps. He put his hand down without looking as .he imagined that his hand would rest on the trapdoor. He lost balance and went tumbling down the ladder from the sudden shock. Without knowing it he had put his hand on a large rat and it bit him hard.

OR

Helen continued to enjoy her new experiences. The more she learnt, the happier she became. Time passed and she returned home from the North and spent the autumn months with her family at their summer cottage at Fern Quarry on the mountains. Life at Fern Quarry was very pleasant. Their cottage was located in beautiful natural surroundings. There were trees, streams, waterfalls, plants and beautiful flowers all around. There were many visitors to the Quarry. There she spent an evening at the camphire.

Helen spent and enjoyed many happy hours riding on a pony, whom she called Black Beauty. Many times, both Helen and her teacher got lost in the woods and eventually returned to cottage with beautiful flowers and a sense of great adventure. One day Helen, Mildred and Miss Sullivan lost their way in the woods. They wandered around for a long time but to no avail. It was getting dark and they had no choice but to take a narrow bridge, built over a deep gorge which was a short cut to Fern Quarry. While they were walking on the narrow bridge a train came rushing. They all had a narrow escape and felt choked by smoke, ashes and the heat from the engine. Somehow with great difficulty they managed to reach home. This incident stayed in Helen’s mind throughout her life.

Miss Sarah Fuller was a ‘sweet natured lady’ who started tutoring Helen. She allowed Helen to pass her hand lightly over her face and feel the position of her tongue and lips when she made a sound. In total eleven lessons were given to her by Miss Fuller. Helen’s first sentence was ‘It is warm’. Helen felt liberated and she got new strength from her ability to speak. She practised her speech on her toys, stones, birds and dumb animal. Miss Fuller taught her the elements of the speech but she was to continue practising herself with Miss Sullivan’s help.

Helen gave up the manual alphabet method to develop her speech. Even though, Miss Sullivan and her friends continued to use it to communicate with her to improve her speech. Helen was wholly dependent on her fingers. She had to use the sense of touch to catch the vibrations of the throat. This was a tiring and exhausting process but visualising the joy on her lovely face spurred her in her efforts. The thought that gave her immense satisfaction was I am not dumb now. Finally the happiest moment arrived. Helen had developed her own speech and was eager to return home. As the train reached the station and her family heard her speech, all of them were overjoyed.
