MBOSE HSSLC – Useful Study Tips and Tricks

An exam is the most important phase of a student’s life. Board exams, more specifically, are of utmost importance because it essentially dictates the student’s career and future prospects. Failing to secure good marks will result in the students losing potential opportunities – both in academics as well as career. Here are a few tips and tricks to help students ace through their exams:

Setting a Time Table: Creating a study schedule is one of the most basic priorities every student should inculcate. Studying every day at a specific time makes it easier to form a habit. And to secure good marks, timely revision of concepts is crucial. Usually, for a habit to form, an individual has to perform the same activity for a minimum of 30 days. The best time to start studies would be during the wee hours, i.e., either early morning or late at night. Students can also choose to study whenever there is minimal distraction.

Prioritizing Subjects: Students must choose their priorities when studying. For instance, if a subject feels too difficult, then the students must invest more time in that particular subject. Subjects that do not need much effort to study must be moved down the priority list. Time is of the essence, hence this strategy ensures that students utilize their time efficiently.

Practice: Practicing is another fundamental aspect of an efficient learning process. Every important concept needs adequate practice if the same has to be recalled correctly in an exam. Mathematics is one such subject where the students get better the longer they practice. A particularly hard concept or a problem will become easier over time as long as the student practices regularly. Failure to regularly practice can have undesirable consequences; for instance, a student may not be able to recall a concept correctly in an exam.

Even if the student did manage to recall a concept, the information can become distorted, which can lead to the answer becoming incorrect. Furthermore, the time taken to recall information significantly increases if the student does not practice well. Hence, students are advised to practice until perfection before attempting to write an exam.

Mnemonic Devices: Mnemonic devices are abbreviations that are used to remember a set of rules, expansions, processes or other information. A classic example of a mnemonic is the PEMDAS, which is an abbreviation for “Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, & Subtraction.” It can be remembered as “Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sophie”. Similarly, using this technique for other subjects can be extremely helpful. Memorizing and recalling information becomes easy and accurate. Chemistry is the subject where mnemonic devices become the most useful; there are many concepts, such as the various block elements, which have many elements under each block. Hence, students are requested to adopt this technique wherever possible.

Making Notes: Making notes involves the student jotting down relevant points during the course of a lecture. This activity is deemed useful because the student is far more alert and attentive. This occurs due to the fact that the students coordinate their hands, ears, and minds to record information. Furthermore, the student creates their own customized notes, which holds snippets of useful information.

These notes are very helpful as they can help the student to brush through important concepts right before an exam. It also acts as another point of reference, wherein, any additional information stated during the lecture can be recalled. Hence, students are advised to inculcate the habit of making notes.
