Debate on RainWater Harvesting | RainWater Harvesting Debate, Uses, Advantages and Disadvantages

Debate on Rainwater Harvesting: Good morning, my respected jury members, respected teachers, my worthy opponents, and my dear friends.

Today I ________is here to represent my views on a very important topic “Rainwater Harvesting is the need of the hour”. So I am speaking in favor of the motion.

At the beginning of the debate on rainwater harvesting, we must understand the process of rainwater harvesting and what are the benefits derived from it. It is a known fact that rainwater is the only source of fresh water. As we are going to face acute scarcity of freshwater in the coming days, there is no doubt that we must conserve freshwater as much as possible.

The percentage of water on earth is 71% which’s why it is called the blue planet. But the maximum water on earth is from seas and oceans which is salty and of no use. It is neither suitable for drinking, domestic, agriculture, nor industrial purposes. So it becomes extremely necessary that we must preserve the freshwater that is available now to rescue life on earth in the future.

My dear friends, the debate on rainwater harvesting is genuinely important in the current scenario as people have already started facing a shortage of water in many parts of the world. There are many countries in the world including India which are facing the acute crisis of water. This is a real challenge to accommodate in such a situation. A real and responsible solution in this respect is rainwater harvesting.

Debate on rainwater harvesting emphasizes the importance of taking drastic steps and initiatives for rainwater harvesting. We all have to inculcate the habit and practice of rainwater harvesting, especially in the areas which are already experiencing a shortage of water.

Rainwater harvesting means storing rainwater instead of runoff. But the question arises during this debate on rainwater harvesting, why do we need to store the rainwater? The answer is simple. In a place where there is a shortage of water, we can easily follow the process of storing rainwater which can be used for various purposes like, washing, cleaning, and watering plants. Freshwater is needed in all spheres of life so it’s time to conserve water in the form of rainwater harvesting.

Now in this part of the debate on rainwater harvesting, I will talk about the various ways of rainwater harvesting. This can help to make us independent and meet our demands of water. The two simple ways of rainwater harvesting are- i) rooftop harvesting and ii) surface runoff harvesting. We should have a clear idea of these methods just to utilize the water in some judicious way. In rooftop harvesting, reservoirs are made on a rooftop to collect rainwater. It can be either stored in tanks or diverted to an artificial recharge system. By surface run-off harvesting, rainwater flows away as surface run-off, especially in urban areas. This run-off should be caught and used for recharging aquifers through a simple method.

A common and relevant question arises in the course of this debate on rainwater harvesting, what is the cost involved in rainwater harvesting? This is one of the positive aspects of rainwater harvesting because this process is quite cost-effective. The process is also easy to implement because it involves less complicated technologies. So rainwater harvesting is the best and easiest way to solve the problem of the water crisis.

Just think of the situation a few years later- people will fight with each other for a drop of water. The level of underground water is decreasing day by day and if people don’t take this issue seriously there will be a huge problem afterward. It is necessary to spread this message to every corner so that each and everyone tries to conserve rainwater by some means or other. We can highlight the advantages of rainwater harvesting such as it is cost-effective, improves the quality and quantity of groundwater, and an effective source of landscape irrigation.

People are reluctant to accept the fact that the world is going to face a severe shortage of water in a few years. The debate on rainwater harvesting helps them to focus attention on this need of the hour. The rivers are polluted by indiscriminate waste from domestic, agricultural, and industrial sectors. The stock of freshwater is gradually decreasing on earth, but still, a large proportion of people in our society aren’t very cautious to avoid wastage of freshwater. Until and unless they start to face the scarcity of water in daily life, they would not be serious enough. But it will be very late by that time, so it is necessary to adopt the practice of rainwater harvesting as early as possible.

The debate on rainwater harvesting may continue, considering its implementation across locations and involvement of people but no one can deny the fact that rainwater harvesting is the best and most effective long-term solution to address the problem of freshwater shortage. Farmers must adopt the practice of rainwater harvesting in rural areas to solve their demand for freshwater for irrigation purposes. This will result in the judicious use of fresh water and minimize water wastage. When nature is kind enough to provide us freshwater supply through rain, why not utilize it properly for future needs? Our country experiences a good amount of rainfall each year and by implementing proper rainwater harvesting methods we can solve the problem of fresh water to a great extent.

The debate on rainwater harvesting must be encouraged so that a large proportion of people become aware of the importance of the conservation of freshwater. So let’s join hands to save life on earth by avoiding the shortage of water and applying proper ways of rainwater harvesting. Let’s be more responsible and sensitive to the issues that are posing a threat to life on earth. We all know water is another synonym for life, and rainwater harvesting is one of the great opportunities to save life on earth.
